The Course
Our facility is split up into three types of activities. Most groups
that come out to the UBC Ropes course will experience all three
types of initiatives, unless you book a Taste of Challenge program,
which used Portable and Low elements.
 |
Portable Initiatives: These
activities, much like ice breakers, work to increase group
energy, relieve tension, begin the creative thinking process
and start the stream of smiles. This is when groups realize
what the course is all about. All of these activities take
place on the ground. |
 |
Low elements: These activities
take place anywhere from 1 – 8 feet off the ground.
They build on the skills developed during the portable initiatives.
Low activities also involve the idea of perceived risk which
greatly enhances trust within a team. These activities engage
participants in both physical and mental fashions. |
 |
High Elements: For those that
choose, the UBC Ropes Course offers the opportunity to take
your learning to new heights – literally. Our high elements
consist of beams, platforms, wires, and ropes high up in the
trees. They are all designed with the team in mind and provide
a role for everyone. Our high elements range from 15-50 feet
in the air, and everyone choosing to climb will be properly
equipped with the necessary safety equipment.
|
Equipment is routinely inspected and replaced. Emotional
and physical safety are at the top of PAL staff’s responsibilities.
Some activities can be intimidating; however, fearful students
will have a support network of peers and trained professional
staff to address their hesitation. No one is forced to do
anything; all climbers must be willing participants.
|
For me the most rewarding
part of working at the ropes course is when I see people feeling
confident enough in their team's support to really challenge
themselves and get over some of their fears. It's amazing to
see someone walk away from the course with better self-confidence
and a sense of belonging to the group. The smile on their face
is just incredible. I do believe that in many cases this experience
stays with them and inspires them for years to come.”
